‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ (2014, 12A)

By far my favourite Marvel film to date, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ is the action-packed superhero film that I can’t get enough of.

After the events of ‘Avengers: Assemble’, Captain America (A.K.A Steve Rogers), is trying to get into the swing of modern life after being brought back to life after being frozen in ice during the Second World War. It’s not long before Rogers (played by Chris Evans) is pulled back into duty to tackle a band of pirates who have captured a S.H.I.E.L.D. (a secret government organisation who founded the Avengers and try to keep the world safe) ship with his fellow avenger Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), also known as Black Widow. The story goes on from there as the pirate attack isn’t what it seems and Rogers ends up coming up against a new foe, The Winter Soldier – and this one’s from his past.

I absolutely love this film, you’re thrown straight into the action within the first five minutes of the movie starting and the story is complex yet understandable and interesting. I wasn’t a big fan of 2011’s ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ or really the character at all but ‘The Winter Soldier’ has definitely changed my opinion. As with a lot of superhero sequels, it’s a lot better than its predecessor as it doesn’t have half of its run-time taken up by boring origin story and the character is already developed and known, meaning that the film is really a two-hour fight scene interspersed with small pieces of dialogue and the occasional piece of brief humour.

This is definitely one of the darker films in the Marvel franchise, but I think that’s one of its strong points. Unlike ‘Ant-Man’ or ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ which are mainly comedy films, ‘The Winter Soldier’ is very serious and threatening, with only brief moments of humour. I like this as it reminds me of some other superhero films such as ‘The Dark Knight’ (my review of that film is here) which I really enjoyed and sets this film apart from its predecessors and sequels.

I can’t really fault ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’; it’s dark, gritty and the story is compelling and original. It’s different to other Marvel films in a good way and I think it’s one of the best films to come out of the franchise. For this, I’m going to give ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ ten-out-of-ten for its great story, amazing action sequences and dark nature.
